Welcome to Kereru Kids

Kereru is a New Zealand Wood Pigeon that lives at Maungatapere School. Each week Kereru visits our science group and learns how to be a scientist by taking part in various experiments with us. This is a diary of his adventures.

Science 17 November

Today we hoped into 3 groups and did our own science experiments.

Our Focus was to think, notice and wonder what might happen if...

Group one made Rainbow paper - we used black paper, clear nail varnish and a bowl of water.
It works by dipping the paper into the water which has the nail polish in it.  The nail polish then makes a thin layer on the paper and the light gets reflected by the nail polish creating rainbow patters.

Group two made a rain cloud - we used shaving cream, water, food colouring and clear plastic cups.  We discussed our prior knowledge about how rain clouds are made and why it rains.  During the experiment we noticed that the more food colouring we used the heavier it rained and the less food colouring we used the less it rained.

Group 3 made Bubble chain - we used a coke bottle cut in half, dish cloth and water with dishwashing liquid in it. We placed the cloth over the end of the bottle, dipped it into the soapy water and then blew.  All the bubbles came out and never separated this is because the air struggles to get through the cloth and then the air can't get between them and to separate the bubbles.
